John Harvard's Brew House Apple Crisp

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup old fashion oats
  • 1 2/3 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 3/4 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 5 cups granny smith apples,cored,sliced & peeled
  • 5 cups McIntosh apples, cored sliced & peeled
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • vanilla ice cream (optional)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large bowl combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. With pastry blender, 2 knives, or your fingers cut in butter until the mixture resembles a struesel. In a large bowl combine the apples, granulated sugar, and (nutmeg if desired). Place half the apple mixture in a 13x2 inch baking pan and sprinkle with a quarter or the struesel mixture. Cover with remaining apples and press down with the back of a large spoon. Sprinkle with the remaining struesel mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Serve with warm with vanilla icecream..
